Tick tock tick tock …

I have only 3 days remaining to procure Christmas presents.  Once again I fear I’ve left it too late for stress free shopping.  And of course, I’ve procrastinated on buying my 5 year old’s Santa gifts which now means, given that she’s on holidays, I’m going to have to find a time to sneak out of the house to go shopping.  Any opportunity to avoid the gleaming mega malls open late night and instead buy something 2nd hand/vintage or handmade is fast becoming a pipe dream.  I am going to hit the charity stores though to see if I can find some “dress up” type outfits / hats etc – wish me luck.

For other loved ones I’ve managed to stick fairly close to my “not buying new” mandate and thought I’d share my ideas with you – perhaps it will give those who are undertaking a similar challenge some inspiration.  Loved ones please avert your eyes now as don’t want to ruin the surprise!  I won’t reveal who’s getting what just in case you can’t resist peaking!

I guess something is better than nothing.  And my hubby & I won’t be exchanging gifts this year so that’s less guilt about consumerism.

Super excited.

Literally three days ago I was commenting to my mum that perhaps at the age of 36 I should finally learn how to sew.  Given my last sewing attempt was in school at 13 when I managed to sew the legs of a pair of shorts together my record is not so stellar.  Then the “powers that be” smiled on me and I was offered an old sewing machine by our neighbours who are moving out.  How fortuitous is that!  There is a potential that it may not work but there are plenty of repair places I could take it to if that’s the case.  My mum is coming over tomorrow to inspect and pass judgement.

If it works, I’m really looking forward to making the girls dresses (using reclaimed, off-cut fabrics of course), soft toys, cushion covers and whatever else I’m inspired to create.  Hopefully as I improve I may be even able to alter clothes I find  at 2nd hand/vintage stores.

Whilst I’m waiting on the verdict, I was inspired to create a prototype of an owl soft toy that I’d like to give to some friends who are due to have babies soon.  I used some fabric swatches I bought at Reverse Garbage (see post) and the stuffing from a pillow.  The prototype is a little rough but I have an enormous sense of pride in acting creating something!  Must admit it did take forever but if the sewing machine works I can speed things up.

So welcome to the world … Snooby (named by my 5 year old)

Oh my goodness!  My baby girl is 9months old.  Hasn’t time flown!

Only 3 more months to her 1st birthday and time to start planning festivities.  Are you crazy I hear you saying?!  You have plenty of time!

Well no, not really.  Between now and then I have the silly season of parties, long summer days, Christmas, my dad’s and hubby’s b’days and planning a return to work.  In addition, I have the rather unique self prescribed position of not being able to buy anything new!  Just a trifle difficult when buying presents and decorating for the party.  I could go all low key, after all she’s only turning 1 and won’t remember, but given that her birthday is smack bang in the middle of summer it provides me the perfect opportunity to not just celebrate her first 365 days but also thank all our family & friends who helped make the first year easier.

My goal, as with Christmas & the other B’day presents, is to give presents ticking the box of either handmade, organic, vintage, fair trade, 2nd hand or ethical.  Ideally I want to minimise any purchasing and try and make as many things as possible.  On top of I want to make all the invitations, party favours and decorations.  I am really looking forward to some creative thinking and keeping an eye out in thrift shops and online for the all the things I will need.  I will definitely be paying a return visit to Reverse Garbage (a store I wrote about in a previous post) to help me in my quest.

I hope years down the track I can show my little one pictures of her very first party and explain to her that mummy didn’t just hire someone to make everything fabulous, I created it all myself!

Following are some creative projects I’m looking forward to accomplishing.

Tissue Paper Pom-Poms – go Martha Stewart!

Pin Wheels – thanks Wikihow

And finally, my mission over the next 3mths is to find a couple of these gorgeous drink dispensers.

Does anyone have any great examples of DIY 1st birthday parties?
